From the Principal's Desk
Dear Readers
Swami Vivekananda has said “Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man,”
and a person has to be groomed from inside out." We, at Open Minds Kankarbagh, believe
that it's the inside of the man that has to influence the world outside, therefore, we toil
enough to bring that divinity hidden within every child out on the surface.
Every child is unique who may share the same ideas, interests or hobbies yet has an
individual propensity to learn things. We prepare our students to think on their feet. Our
sterling board results every year consolidate our teaching-learning approach and this year is
no exception.
As always, we are elated to share with you the exemplary results of our students in the CBSE
Board Examinations both in Grade X and Grade XII. Open Minds is an epitome of academic
excellence and has recorded astounding results setting a high standard for the following
batches to surpass. The entire fraternity complements the students and conveys best wishes
for their future endeavors.
The month of May remains very important for both the teachers and the students. The long
awaited summer holidays are to commence. Children remain busy planning out trips to
places of their choice or indulge in other recreational activities. The teachers are on toes
trying to complete the allocated syllabus on time. On the other hand, the Pre-midterm
Examinations also arrive weaving another tale with their threads of seriousness. Recreation
is essential, but they must be earned on the basis of a serious effort made for one's all-round
development.
So wish you all a meaningful vacation ahead! Come fresh from your long recess to initiate
another chapter of growth and glory.
Happy Reading!
Yours truly,
Reshma Singh

Florence Nightingale was born on 12 May, 1820 at Florence in Italy, and before
her death in 1910, she had dedicated all the years of her life to establish the
foundational philosophy of modern nursing. She was named 'Florence' after
the city of her birth. Apart from being a social reformer, she was also an
excellent statistician.
Being a precocious child, she excelled at the study of mathematics and
different languages. At an early age, she could communicate in French,
German, Italian, Greek and Latin. Her father guided her through the study of
literature, philosophy and history.
At the age of 16, experiencing a special call from God to work for reducing
human suffering, she found nursing to be a suitable path to serve both God and
humanity, but her attempt to obtain training in nursing was thwarted by her
aristocratic family as they thought it to be too low an activity for the family of
that stature. But despite all these hurdles, Florence enrolled at the Institution of
Protestant Deaconesses at Kaiserswerth in Germany. There she learnt the basic
skills in nursing, the value of patient observation and the importance of good
hospital organization.
During the Crimean War (Oct, 1853 to Feb, 1856) between the Russians and the
British, French and Ottoman Turkish, she was appointed Nursing
Superintendent of the British and allied forces in Turkey. In the military
hospital, where she took charge of the affairs, she found things to be in a
chaotic state. The whole place was littered with filth and vermin. She found that
lack of hygiene was a bigger cause of death of the injured soldiers than the
wounds they had suffered on the battle field. On her intervention, things started
looking up and the injured felt relieved having been cared much better than
before.
She had a missionary zeal for the care of the patients. She spent numerous
hours at a stretch in patient wards, and her night rounds with a lamp in her hand
to those wards providing personal care to the injured and suffering soldiers won
her the title 'the Lady with the Lamp', and soon she was a celebrity the world
over.
The credit for establishing the first scientifically based nursing school 'The
Nightingale School of Nursing' at St. Thomas Hospital in London (1860) goes to
her. She was also the first to set up training for midwives and nurses in
workhouse infirmaries.
Her immense body of work for humanity got her several honours and awards.
Florence was the first lady to be awarded the 'Order of Merit (1907) which is
specially awarded to those providing eminent service in the armed forces or
have contributed uniquely in the field of science, art, literature or to the
promotion of culture. Every year on May 12, the world commemorates her birth
anniversary as 'International Nurses Day'.
She left for her heavenly abode in 1910, and her earthly remains were buried at
St. Paul's Cathedral, London, she still reigns our hearts as the reliever of
suffering souls and an inestimable gem of the entire humanity.

A B C, Plant a Tree
What to talk of the grown up ones, even the tiny tots at
OMK understand how important trees are for our
existence on this planet. They are one of the biggest
support systems to be found here for almost each and
every creature. Plantation drives are a must now as
man has irresponsibly been cutting trees and clearing
forests for decades. So the school every year
organises such programmes to restore the sanctity of
the environment and create some awareness among
kids. This year too, the children with great fervour
contributed to planting saplings in the school campus.

Mother, Oh Mother!
Mother, oh mother! The core of my universe, the centre of my life! The world is
charming,
for you are there to hold my hand. I sleep the sweetest of sleeps, for
your lap is my bed. Dawns are bright and beautiful, for you are there to wake me
up with the warmest of your kiss. I happily go along with the regimentation of the
school, for I know, at the end of each day I have to return to you. With emotions
flooding my little heart, I say thanks to you.
The children of OMK have expressed their gratitude to the mothers of the world
with sweet cards they themselves have prepared...
We thank one who is first our mother forever our friend.

In keeping with this belief, Open

Labour Day
Labour is the foundation of all the progress man has registered in the journey of civilization. It's
toiling through pain and pleasure, joy and boredom, highs and lows that he creates some
difference in the world. The people who have respected labour, have prospered through times
and become a guiding beacon for other races.
To mark the occasion, the young geniuses of Open Minds took some time out of their academic
schedules and participated in several interesting programmes organised by their mentors. It'll
be gratifying to have a look at the snaps captured from those moments.
